When Emily reached out and told me she and Chris were adopting another child, I was so thrilled for them. Their first experience with adopting their son was, to borrow Emily’s words, a “complicated joy and tragic gift.” She writes beautifully about their journey of adoption over on her website, The Catholic Table.

On this side of things, a year and a half after bringing their sweet boy home, life looks beautiful. Toby is a healthy, happy little boy who loves to read and play and move. He lights up when Emily reads him Little Blue Truck. He giggles helplessly as Chris hands him a lemon. A mischievous glint in his eye precipitates a throw of the lemon, and when Emily deftly catches it, more giggles ensue. The joy is genuine and effortless and permeates every corner of this house.

Some of this joy was hard earned, and as Chris and Emily gear up to start the process of another adoption, I hope you’ll join me in offering up some prayers for them. Please pray for Emily and Chris and Toby, that their transition to a family of four is a smooth one. Please pray for the mother who makes the gut wrenching choice to offer up her child for adoption. And please pray for the life of their new little one, whoever he or she may be.
